Gateway XT creates safe entranceway

To access Switzerland's Raiffeisen Bank, visitors must cross a curved steel bridge which turns into an unsafe and slippery walkway in the winter months.

The problem

Part of a large retail complex in Gossau, in the north-east of Switzerland, the Raiffeisen Bank is separated from the parking lot by a river. The bridge that connects the car park to the retail complex is curved, made from steel and gets very cold during winter. So cold, in fact, that it is known to ice over, causing pedestrians to slip as they made the trip between their cars and the bank.

The checklist

  • Can be laid over an existing surface
  • Flexible enough to contour seamlessly over a curved bridge surface
  • Strong enough to withstand heavy foot and traffic wheel traffic
  • Delivers superior slip resistance
  • Quickly drains and dissipates large amounts of water

The solution

Flooring specialist Wibatec recommended our heavy-duty outdoor mat Gateway 14 XT product as the perfect external walkway matting solution for this unique application. With the ability to withstand extreme weather conditions, the matting features an open grid that’s specifically designed to drain and dissipate water, ice and snow quickly and effectively. The extra-aggressive surface also has a deep-etched tread for collecting and trapping dirt and debris, as well as giving pedestrians extra traction underfoot along the slippery walkway.

Gateway 14 XT is made from flexible PVC, which allows it to follow the curve of the bridge while being sturdy enough to remain in place in extreme weather conditions. Installation of the external walkway matting was simple due to the one-piece construction that can be cut to fit on site.

“This was an interesting application which presented a unique set of difficulties. We had to find matting which was loose laid, flexible enough to follow the curve of the bridge yet sturdy enough to remain in place, even when the steel was completely iced over. We knew Frontrunner XT would provide the perfect answer”
